The Comments feature transforms your financial analysis into a structured collaboration layer—supporting internal team discussions or advisor-to-client communication directly at the line item level, where decisions are made and documented, preserving context, clarity, and accountability in every discussion.
You can leave comments on:
P&L line items
Sales Forecast line items
1. Adding a Comment
To leave a comment:
Go to the P&L or Sales Forecast page.
Hover your mouse over:
A line item name, or
A specific month value.
When the three dots (•••) appear, click them.
In the edit modal that opens, scroll to the bottom.
Use the Comments section (expanded by default).
Type your message and click Send.
You can delete your draft before submitting it if needed.
What You’ll See
All previous comments left for that line item.
Full conversation threads with replies.
The name of the commenter and a date & time stamp on every comment.
Visual Indicator
Once a comment is left:
A purple circle indicator will appear signaling that a comment exists on that line item.
2. Replying to Comments
You can:
Reply directly to an existing comment.
Start a new comment thread.
Replies are grouped under the original comment in a structured tree format for clarity.
3. @Mentioning Team Members
You can notify specific team members using @mentions.
Example:
@Sarah can you confirm this revenue adjustment?
What Happens When You @Mention Someone?
The tagged user receives:
An in-app notification
An email notification (if enabled)
Important:
Email notifications are only sent when a user is @mentioned.
Replies alone do NOT trigger email notifications.
4. In-App Notifications
When someone tags you in a comment:
A notification badge appears on the Comments icon in the sidebar.
The Comments icon is located under the Teams icon.
This works similarly to social notification indicators — making it easy to see when your attention is needed.
5. Viewing All Comments in One Place
To see a consolidated list of all comment threads:
Click the Comments icon in the sidebar and you’ll be taken to the Comments page.
How the Comments Page Works
Threads are:
Sorted by date
Most recent activity appears at the top
Page Layout (Grid View)
Column | Description |
Line Item | Displays the line item name and source (e.g., Advertising (P&L) or Landscape Services (Sales Forecast)) |
Comment Thread | Shows original comment + most recent reply by default. Expand to view full chronological thread. Replies are indented beneath the original comment. |
Applies To Date | Date or date range tied to the edit (e.g., April 2027 or May 2027–July 2028) |
Date Created | When the original comment was created |
Commenter | User who started the thread |
Status | Open or Resolved |
Go to Comment | Button that takes you directly to the related line item in the P&L page or Sales Forecast page. |
6. Resolving & Managing Threads
Resolving a Thread
If a discussion is complete but you want to preserve it:
Click the three dots (•••) at the top right of the comment box.
Select Resolve.
When resolved:
The entire thread is grayed out.
It remains visible for record-keeping.
Any team member can unresolve the thread to reopen it.
7. Editing & Deleting Comments
Permissions vary by role:

Important Deletion Rules
If a user deletes their original comment that started a thread, all replies in that thread are also deleted.
Deleting a thread removes the entire conversation so if you don't want that history deleted, we recommend that you resolve it instead.
8. Email Notifications for Mentions
When you are @mentioned, you’ll receive an email like this:
Subject: You were mentioned in a comment

To view and/or respond to the comment, click on the button below and log into RunSmart.

Why This Feature Matters
The Comments feature turns your financial analysis into a collaborative workspace. Instead of sending emails or Slack messages about specific forecast modification you want to make, your team can:
Discuss adjustments directly on the line item
Track decisions historically
Keep context attached to the numbers
Resolve conversations when complete
This keeps your financial decision-making clear, documented, and centralized inside RunSmart.
